“so that the tested genuineness of your faith – more precious than gold that perishes though it is tested by fire – may be found to result in praise and glory and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ.” 1 Peter 1:7

As we approach the XXIII Olympic Winter Games, I’m reminded of a personal Olympic trial that was both painful and exceedingly helpful. I’ve had the privilege of representing the United States of America in the Ice Hockey arena on numerous occasions. It remains a proud moment for me despite the fact we never won a medal.

I recall the first time I was invited to the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs to try out for the USA 17 and under team. We had at least 100 guys from around the United States competing for about 30 spots. I desperately wanted to make the team.

Being a new believer in Christ, I began pleading with God, “Please let me make this team!” I was on my best behavior that week: up early reading my bible, praying, not cussing on the ice… much?! At the end of the week, the selections were made and I’d made the team! God came through big-time. And with that huge moment, I did what every God-fearing grateful young man would do. I went out that night and partied and got drunk with my teammates.

Not a moment I’m proud of, but I am thankful for. That night, as my teammates and I roamed the streets of Colorado Springs, we ran into a man passing out Christian tracks. He was boldly proclaiming the Good News of Jesus! Can you say ‘Buzz Kill’? In this moment I knew how Peter felt hearing the rooster crow the third time. The words from that guy on the street were like a sledgehammer. It shattered my heart forever. My teammates started to mock the guy a bit. I quickly ushered them away and told them to go on ahead.

In that quiet moment of the wee hours of the night, the Lord drew a line in the sand for me. He posed the question, “do you want ME or do you just want to USE ME?” This was a game-changing, life-changing moment for me. In that moment I declared “Jesus, I choose you; forgive me.” That night has marked me and changed me forever.

I’m not at all proud of what I DID that night but will be forever grateful for what HE DID through it. This was my Olympic Gold moment. Go for GOLD with Jesus.

Enjoy the games! Go team USA
